Courage for Parents: Trying Your First Adult Class

If you have ever watched your child train at Peak Performance MMA in Keller and thought, "I'd love to try that, but I'm not ready," this post is for you.

This month our kids are working on courage. Our October motto is "Brave isn't never being scared. It's trying anyway." That idea works for grown-ups too.

Why does trying a first class feel so hard?

Walking into a gym where everyone seems to know what they're doing is uncomfortable. Most adults worry about being out of shape, being too old, or looking silly.

Our founder, Coach Paul Halme, likes to say he was one of the worst white belts on Earth. He started training in 1997 and went on to win an MMA title and a Masters BJJ World Championship. Everyone on our mat started on day one, and our oldest student is 71. You can read how we teach courage to kids in our post on being brave even when you're afraid.

Which classes are made for beginners?

We built beginners-only classes so new adults don't get thrown in with experienced students:

  • Beginner No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu: Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 PM
  • Beginner Gi Jiu-Jitsu: Tuesday and Thursday, 6:00 PM

New adults take their first jiu-jitsu class on a Monday or Wednesday. Learn more on our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu page.

Can I train while my kids are in class or at school?

Yes. Kids Jiu-Jitsu for ages 8 to 15 runs Monday through Thursday at 6:00 PM, the same time as our adult beginner jiu-jitsu classes, so a parent and child can train on the same night.

If daytime works better, Muay Thai runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11:00 AM to noon, while kids are at school. Early risers can join Jiu-Jitsu All Levels at 6:00 AM, Monday through Friday. See every option on our class schedule.

What happens at my free trial class?

You join a regular class for free. Most first classes include a warm-up, a short technique demo and time for questions. You go at your own pace.

Wear athletic clothes (shorts and a t-shirt are fine) and bring water. No gear is needed for the first class.
