Looking for kids martial arts in Keller? At Peak Performance MMA & BJJ, kids ages 4 to 7 start in our Little Ninjas class Monday through Thursday at 5:15 PM, kids ages 8 to 15 train in Kids Jiu-Jitsu and Kids Kickboxing, and every child's first visit is a free trial class.
Here is the short version for busy parents: kids can start at age 4, classes are grouped by age, and you can try a class for free before you decide anything. The rest of this post covers ages, class times, what kids learn, where we are, and how to book that first class.
What age can kids start martial arts in Keller?
At Peak, kids can start at age 4. We split kids into two age groups so each child learns at the right pace:
- Little Ninjas (ages 4 to 7). Classes for younger kids focus on games, movement and coordination, so kids learn the basics while they burn off energy.
- Kids Jiu-Jitsu and Kids Kickboxing (ages 8 to 15). Older kids go deeper into technique, control and discipline.
If your child is right on the edge of an age group, ask us at the free trial class and we will help you pick the right fit.
Kids class schedule
All of our kids classes are in the late afternoon and early evening, after school:
- Little Ninjas, ages 4 to 7: Monday through Thursday, 5:15 to 5:50 PM
- Kids Kickboxing, ages 8 to 15: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 5:15 to 6:00 PM
- Kids Jiu-Jitsu, ages 8 to 15: Monday through Thursday, 6:00 to 6:40 PM
Have more than one child? Siblings can often train on the same trip. A 6-year-old can take Little Ninjas at 5:15 PM while an older brother or sister takes Kids Kickboxing at the same time on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, or stays for Kids Jiu-Jitsu at 6:00 PM. We also have a family discount, and we go over the details in person at your free trial class.
You can see every class at the gym, including adult classes, on our full class schedule.
What will my child learn?
Our kids martial arts classes in Keller teach the fundamentals of jiu-jitsu and kickboxing.
- Jiu-jitsu is a grappling art. Kids learn how to move, hold a position and escape, and technique matters more than size or strength.
- Kickboxing builds stance, balance and coordination through punches and kicks.
The bigger goals go beyond technique. Kids build confidence, practice focus and listening, work on teamwork and leadership, and connect with positive mentors. Along the way they also learn anti-bullying strategies and the fundamentals of self-defense.
A life skill every month
Each month our kids classes focus on one life skill that kids can use at home and at school. October's life skill is courage: trying something new even when you feel nervous. You can read more in our post Courage: Teaching Kids to Be Brave Even When They're Afraid.
Who teaches the kids classes?
Peak was founded by Paul Halme, an MMA Champion and Masters BJJ World Champion who started training in 1997. Every class follows a structured curriculum, so each class builds on the last one instead of being made up on the spot.
Kids classes are taught by a small team of our coaches. The coach your child meets at the free trial class is part of the same team they will train with each week, so your child will see a familiar face when they come back.
