Beginner BJJ in Keller: How to Start

Want to start Brazilian jiu-jitsu in Keller? At Peak Performance MMA, new students start in classes made only for beginners, and your first class is a free trial.

A lot of adults put off jiu-jitsu because they think they need to be in shape first, or they worry about being thrown in with experienced people on day one. That is exactly why Paul Halme built beginners-only classes at Peak. Here is how to get started.

Do I need experience to start BJJ?

No. Our beginner classes are for people who have never trained. You learn the basics step by step, with other people who are also new, before you ever train with more experienced students.

Age is not a barrier either. Our oldest student is 71.

When are the beginner BJJ classes?

Beginner classes run Monday through Thursday at 6:00 PM:

  • Beginner No-Gi: Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 PM
  • Beginner Gi: Tuesday and Thursday, 6:00 PM

New students come in for their trial class on a Monday or Wednesday.

If evenings are hard, we also have Jiu-Jitsu All Levels at 6:00 AM, Monday through Friday, for people who like to train before work. You can see every class on our full class schedule.

Once you have some training under your belt, your coach can tell you when you are ready for our other classes, like the all-levels rolling sessions.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi?

Both teach the same art: how to control a position, escape and finish using technique instead of size or strength.

  • Gi classes use the traditional jiu-jitsu uniform. You can grip the jacket and pants, which adds a lot of techniques.
  • No-Gi classes are done in regular athletic clothes, so the grips and pace are a little different.

Most people end up enjoying both. You can learn more on our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class page.

Who teaches the classes?

Peak was founded by Paul Halme, an MMA Champion and Masters BJJ World Champion who has trained since 1997. Paul likes to say he was one of the worst white belts on Earth, so he knows what it feels like to be brand new. Every class follows a structured curriculum, so each class builds on the last one.

How do I book my first class?

Call (817) 614-9325 or request a free trial class using the box below. Wear athletic clothes (shorts and a t-shirt are fine) and bring water. No gear is needed for your first class. We are at 5500 Feed Mill Dr Ste 520, Keller, TX 76244, and adults from Keller and nearby towns are welcome.

Yes. Beginner No-Gi (Monday and Wednesday at 6:00 PM) and Beginner Gi (Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 PM) are made for new students.

What should I wear to my first jiu-jitsu class?

Athletic clothes, like shorts and a t-shirt, plus a water bottle. No gear is needed for the first class.
