Most of the adults that come in to Peak Performance MMA aren’t looking to become the next George St. Pierre. In fact, most of the people that come in don’t know what they’re looking for at all! But they do know this, they are absolutely bored out of their minds going to their normal gym, picking up the same weights, jogging on the same beaten down treadmill, and avoiding eye contact with the same strangers.

I get it. When I joined Peak Performance I was working at a 24 Hr Fitness as a personal trainer and even I had to find something new to get into for my workouts. I didn’t quite know what to expect coming in but I knew I needed to do something different to get my workouts out of a rut. After the first class I was hooked. I have always hated doing cardio and I had definitely found the replacement I wanted for that. When the first week ended, I felt like I had been hit by a truck. I couldn’t believe it. I had been lifting weights 5-6 times a week religiously for years and had completely forgotten what “sore” was. That was when I realized how much more effort I was putting into the training then I was into just lifting weights. Using your entire body in chains of movement as opposed to just isolating muscles and training places such a higher demand on the body. It didn’t take long before I shifted my entire training focus into martial arts and used weights just as a means to stay healthy for it.

Now that I get to meet and help guide all of the new members of Team Peak, I hear so many people whose stories are exactly like mine were. They are just tired. Tired of the gym, tired of the monotony, and most of all, tired of not seeing results! I get to be the one to reassure them that this place is different. The days of staring at a TV screen while counting down minutes on the stair-master have ended for them.

Every class is dedicated to a new skill. Your brain is challenged each time you come in to learn and engage. Your body is put through challenges it has never faced before and adapts in tremendous leaps and bounds. Progress in the program is inevitable for the ones that come in and do the work. In the same 2 months people spend doing the same workout routine at their normal boring globo gym our the people in our beginners program have learned basic self-defense, built relationships with other team mates, moved closer to their fitness goals, and maybe more importantly shook out of that gym rut that so many people get trapped in for years.

If you are reading this and you are one of the thousands of people who dread going to the gym when the time comes, maybe you should start to ask yourself why? Fitness does not and should not equate to misery. If you are not enthusiastic about the place you train or the people you train with then I encourage you to go out and find something that excites you. If it happens to be our gym I guarantee the only disappointment you’ll have is that you didn’t try it sooner.
