April Life Skill: Courage!

At Peak Performance, we build our kids up to be champions in life!

One of the ways we do this is through our Life Skills program. We have a total of 12 Life Skills, one for every month. Each month, we go over the Life Skill: defining the skill, telling them examples, having them provide examples, working on each Life Skill at home, and we also try to incorporate the Life Skill into our class.

This month's Life Skill is Courage: to be brave; facing or overcoming your fears.

What ways does Peak help teach Courage?

Setting the Example

Kids' eyes are always on their parents, their coaches, their elders...so, what better way to teach them courage than to show it ourselves! One of the ways we have our coaches show courage is when we have them compete in tournaments. Tournaments can be very nerve racking, especially with larger tournaments where there are larger brackets and more matches. Competing at tournaments allows you to step out of your comfort zone and test your skills against other competitors. Competing isn't for everyone, it takes a lot of courage to be willing to step in front of a gymnasium full of people and show them what you know.

Make New Friends

It takes courage to go up to someone new, talk to them, and become friends with them. So we like to challenge them to make a new friend at school by having them go up to someone they don't normally talk to and invite them to play a game, or strike up a conversation about something. Having the courage to talk to someone new can brighten that persons day!

There’s Nothing to Be Afraid of

A lot of times they are afraid of going with a larger kid, that they will get hurt, their afraid to get submitted, etc…As coaches, we show our students that there is nothing to be afraid of. If they’re afraid to go with a larger or tougher partner, we show them that it’s the perfect time to work on technique. If they are afraid of getting hurt, we assure them that we do our best to be good training partners, and that we aren’t out to hurt each other, but to improve our technique. If they are afraid to get submitted, we make sure they know to TAP OUT; this lets our partners know when they need to stop and let go.

Try Something New

Trying something new can be scary, but you may find out that you love what ever you did! You could try a new food, a new activity, or whatever! We always like to point out to the kids that it took courage for them to come to class on their first day and to try it out.

Example

At the end of every class, we always try to go over what the Life Skill of the month is, and we always have them provide examples. We also assign them simple homework in which they have to share next time in class. By doing this, it causes them to think about the Life Skill more, and not just in class.
