May Life Skill: Self-Respect

At Peak Performance, we don’t just train strong athletes—we build strong character.

One of the ways we do that is through our Life Skills Program, where we focus on a different core value each month. These life lessons help our students grow not just on the mats, but in their homes, schools, and communities.

Each month, we define the Life Skill, share real-life examples, encourage students to come up with their own, assign simple “homework,” and reinforce the concept during class.

This month’s Life Skill is Self-Respect:

Pride and confidence in oneself; a feeling that one is behaving with honor and dignity.

🧠 Positive Thoughts = Positive Growth

At Peak, we help kids build a healthy mindset by catching negative self-talk early. When a student says, “I can’t do this” or “I’m not good at this,” we step in and help reframe that thought. Instead of quitting, they learn to say, “I’ll keep trying,” or “I’m getting better.” We believe that self-respect starts with believing in yourself and recognizing your potential.

🧼 Good Hygiene Shows Self-Respect

We use a fun character called “Dirty Danny” to teach what not to do—and to help kids remember why personal hygiene matters! We talk about showering, brushing teeth, washing hands, covering wounds, and keeping their uniforms clean. Taking care of themselves shows respect not only for their own bodies but also for their teammates.

💬 Doing the Right Thing

Self-respect means acting with honor—even when no one’s watching. We encourage our students to treat others kindly, help teammates up, be safe training partners, and support one another. When they do the right thing, they walk taller and build the kind of self-respect that lasts a lifetime.

📝 Reinforcement Through Reflection

At the end of each class, we ask students to recall the Life Skill of the month and give examples of how they’ve applied it. We also give them simple homework to practice at home, like helping with chores, showing kindness to a sibling, or making a healthy choice. These small moments of reflection help reinforce the value of self-respect in everyday life.

We believe that when kids learn to respect themselves, everything else—respect for others, for their training, for their goals—falls into place.
