June Life Skill: Focus

At Peak Performance, we build our kids up to be champions in life! One of the ways we do this is through our Life Skills program. We have a total of 12 Life Skills, one for every month. Each month, we go over the Life Skill: defining the skill, telling them examples, having them provide examples, working on each Life Skill at home, and we also try to incorporate the Life Skill into our class.

This months Life Skill is Focus: to pay attention; block out all distractions to be the best you can be

How does Peak help teach Focus?

Paying attention, i.e. focusing, is a very important skill to have, especially in Jiu Jitsu. We constantly reinforce the importance of this particular skill in class.

When teaching them the moves, we always make sure that the kids are paying full attention. This is important so that they can see each step to the technique they are learning. To help reinforce this, we go over the move multiple times and call on students to explain what to do next. This helps them tremendously on remember the steps and knowing what to do so that they do not get hurt.

We also make sure that everyone is paying attention, and not playing around, when applying the new technique or rolling (Take Down Wars in the Ninja class). Focusing at this time is very important so that they don’t hurt themselves or hurt their partners. Also, by watching other students’ matches, they are able to learn something that they otherwise may not know how to do or get out of.

Finally, at the end of every class, we review the life skill. This helps keep it fresh in their mind and gives them an opportunity to think of different examples.

What are some ways you can help them learn to focus?

- Have them do one thing at a time

- Set aside a reasonable amount of time for your child to focus on 1 task

-To help them foucs on homework, assign a special place and time for them to work on it that won't distract. For example, at the dinner table, away from the tv as soon as they get home

- Schedule breaks. Everyone needs a break after concentrating for a while, especially kids since they need to get up and move a lot. So, set aside a set amount of time so they can rest and recharge. For example, give them 30 mins to play when they get home to give them a break from school, then have them sit down for 30 mins to an hour to work on their homework, then give them another break if they need more time to work.

-Break down task into smaller more manageable tasks. For example, their room is a mess and they are overwhelmed with how much they need to do. Have them focus on getting 1 area cleaned, or getting 1 thing done before moving onto the next area or thing.
