October Life Skill: Initiative - To act/take charge before it is asked/done.

What are some ways to help teach your child to take initiative?

-Allow them to make choices. Kids as young as 2 are able to start making simple decisions: pb&J or pizza, blue shirt or white shirt, etc...As they get older, allow them to make more important decisions.

-Teach them to take responsibility.

Having them put their things away when they get home, keeping their room clean, their toys put up, etc on a daily basis form habits, which in turns leads them to taking the initiative to getting it done.

-Encourage them to do things on their own.

Allowing them to do things on their own, (i.e. getting their school things together, putting away their clothes, clean up their dishes, picking up trash, etc) builds their confidence. The more their confidence grows, the more they will want to take responsibility for.

-Setting a good example.

What better way to teach them to take initiative by showing them that you do? When you see that something needs to be done, announce it so that they see you are doing it. Kids will want to start to do things to model you.
