This Month’s Life Skill: Pride

At Peak Performance, we build our kids up to be champions in life! One of the ways we do this is through our Life Skills program. We have a total of 12 Life Skills, one for every month. Each month, we go over the Life Skill: defining the skill, telling them examples, having them provide examples, working on each Life Skill at home, and we also try to incorporate the Life Skill into our class.

This month’s Life Skill is Pride: a feeling of satisfaction on an achievement, quality, or possession.

Having pride can be positive, especially when it is used with the intention to build yourself up and have a feeling of satisfaction. Having pride in this sense will help free yourself from the bonds of self-doubt, and will build confidence!

How does Peak help teach Pride?

One of the ways that we help teach them about pride, is to have them identify things that they can be proud of. Can they be proud about a good day at school? Making a good grade? Completing a hard task? Creating something spectacular? Working hard and earning their next belt?We provide a couple of different examples to them so they can get an idea, then we have them think of different things that they are proud of in their lives.

We also teach the kids to have pride by acknowledging when we are proud of them. Take for example, they did an amazing job on learning the new technique or working on the drills...or they showed an amazing amount of character and was kind and helpful to their other teammates...or they did an amazing job at expressing one of the life skills that we go over. This can be done with their parents, as well.

Their mom, dad, grandparents, etc can acknowledge when they are proud of them. For example, their parents are proud of them for taking the initiative and doing their chores all by themselves without being prompted to, or they are proud of them for working so hard at completing a task.

Another way that we help teach pride is identifying the different ways that they are proud of themselves. We will go around in a circle and find out what they are proud of achieving. Take one of our younger students for example, he was proud of himself for getting ready for bed and brushing his teeth until the timer beeped with no help. Another student was proud of himself for earning his newest belt.

Having pride in yourself for the your accomplishments that you have achieved will help build confidence in yourself. So, at the end of every class, we try to always go over their life skill. This gives them a chance to let us know the many different ways they are proud of themselves.
