Would you like to get really good at Jiu-Jitsu?

Step 1: To avoid dissappointment you need to define what getting good at Jiu-Jitsu looks like to you.  Is it beating that guy who has always been beating you?  Is it becoming a World Champion?  Is it becoming a Black Belt.

Everyone does Jiu-Jitsu for a different reason.  Focusing on your reason will cut down on alot of frustration.

Step 2: Finding the right school.  Who did they get their Black Belt from?  What is their Jiu-Jitsu lineage.  It should be easy to find out if they are a qualified Black Belt.

Did your coach ever compete?  What have they accomplished on the mat?  The best coaches I have ever had were good competitors.  There are a few exceptions to this rule and these coaches came up in s solid system.

Step 3:  Log your training! Do you have a training journal?  If not, start one.  Writing down what your learning will help it stick and you can review your notes when you can't make it to train.

Step 4:  Put 100% into your training when your on the mat.  Don't be the guy who is always rolling with people 2 ranks lower and avoiding rolling with people who can beat them.

Be honest with yourself and check your ego.  Make sure to always get at least 1 roll in with someone way better than you.

Step 5: How often are you training? If you really want to get good at Jiu-Jitsu you need to get in 4-5 classes a week.  If you plan out your life schedule this should be really easy to do.

Conclusion: Everyone does Jiu-Jitsu for a different reason.  You have people from all walks of life training together to get better at Jiu-Jitsu. Just make sure to define what getting good means to you.  It will help you avoid a lot of frustration on your journey.
