At Peak Performance, we build our kids up to be champions in life! One of the ways we do this is through our Life Skills program. We have a total of 12 Life Skills, one for every month. Each month, we go over the Life Skill: defining the skill, telling them examples, having them provide examples, working on each Life Skill at home, and we also try to incorporate the Life Skill into our class.

This month’s Life Skill is TEAMWORK: trying to accomplish a task together.

What are some of the ways Peak helps instill teamwork?

Partners

Throughout the class, the kids are working in partners. We either assign them a partner, or we let them choose. Some days we will do partner drills where they have to work as a team to accomplish something, and other days we will have them do warmups that require the use of a partner. However, they always work together to learn the technique that we go over that day, and help each other out if they are struggling.

Problem Solving

Not only are our instructors available to help the kids out with any problems that they have, i.e. technique, Life Skill, homework/schoolwork, bullies, etc…, we also have and encourage the kids to help each other out. For example, if someone needs to practice their move, they will grab someone to drill with. Another example would be if someone is struggling with do a move, their partner will help them through it.

Strengths/Weaknesses

While working together through drills or grappling, they learn what their strengths and weaknesses are and how to improve them. They learn how not to hurt each other, as well as encourage each other.

Warm Ups

Some of the warm ups we do at the beginning of class help them work together:

Wheel barrels
Hip escapes
Takedowns
Grip Fights
Arm bars
Triangles
Kimuras
etc

Games

We usually end kids’ classes with a short game. We use teambuilding games such as Jiu Jitsu Freeze Tag" Dodgeball, Chokeball (for the older kids) where they have to work as a team.

Jiu Jitsu Freeze Tag – they work as a team to unfreeze their teammates
Dodgeball – they work as a team to get the other team out
Chokeball – they work as a team to get the ball into the goal

Tournaments

This is probably the best way that we help teach teamwork. Whenever a tournament rolls around, we always work together as a team to help prepare everyone that is competing, helping to increase their strengths and strengthening their weaknesses. Although not everyone competes, everyone is able to help contribute to the training of someone who does compete. Each person has a different style of grappling, so each person is able to help in a different way. Also, when we go to tournaments, we show support of our team by wearing Team Peak apparel, as well as encourage, coach, and cheer everyone on!
